New On The Catwalk

Katie Gallagher

Katie Gallagher recreates the idyllic circumstances of her forest-fairy childhood in the cold, dark urbanity of counterculture New York, her vision thriving like lush dewy moss amidst the concrete outside of a dive bar. After graduating from RISD and working with ThreeASFOUR and Anna Sui, Katie developed a technical prowess that rivals that of a surgeon.

" Everything I make starts with my paintings, which I’ve done every season prior to construction. I love to try to re-create a three-dimensional version of whatever I’ve drawn; it requires pretty unconventional pattern-making."

But her healing is of the sartorial variety; She is known for her desire to reflect the individual’s soul, their “stories, personalities, moods, ideals and attitudes,” into the structural body of her refined clothing. For Katie, fashion, when executed in the right way, can communicate with an eloquence more powerful than words.

___ If you could design anything else other than fashion, what would it be?

I would design the interior and exterior of my own candy store. I would also design some of the candies and ice cream selections which would be sold inside. And no chocolate!

___ What is your favorite color and why?

I love to wear and design in monochromatic black or white. Since this is what I spend most of my time doing, monochromatic black or white must be my favorite color.

___ What is the most indulgent accessory every woman should have, if money was no object?

An enormous black onyx ring. I know this isn’t the most expensive stone but its certainly the most beautiful. If you wanted to rack up its worth, deck it out with some black diamonds.

___ What is your most favorite piece of clothing or accessory in your closet?

It’s more of an outfit. Currently my favorite is my victory skirt in black from spring/summer 2011 collection, paired with a vintage 1990’s Vivienne Westwood corset top in black and under the skirt my center leggings from my fall/winter 2011 collection. I also always have my bag from my first season hanging on my arm. It is made of laser cut leather and lots of gunmetal and black chain.

___ Is bad taste learned or intrinsic?

    I believe it’s a bit of both.

___ What plays the most critical role when you design: colors, fabrics, structure, or something else?

One of the most important things to me other than the idea is patternmaking. Good design can’t be justified by covering a sack with embellishments and crazy textiles.
