Northbrook College is one of the largest educational establishments in Sussex, with approximately 1000 staff and 16000 full and part time students. Northbrook has two campuses in Worthing and a campus at Shoreham Airport.
Northbrook was formed in 1986 when the West Sussex College of Art and Design (founded 1912) merged with two other colleges: Worthing College of Technology and Chelsea College of Aeronautical Engineering (founded 1924).
The College has extensive well-equipped studios and workshops for design, craft and engineering courses. Other facilities include a professional theatre on campus, film studios, a working restaurant, a hair & beauty salon, an aircraft hangar and state-of-the-art recording studios.
The College offers a wide range of full and part time courses from basic skills to degrees. Qualifications include trade and professional qualifications as well as pre-university diplomas and university degrees.
Northbrook College has one of the largest and longest established Art and Design departments in the south, offering education at both university level and sixth form level. It was formed from the former West Sussex College of Art and Design (founded in 1912). The Art and Design courses are now based at the University Centre Worthing at West Durrington, where the campus is shared with students of performing arts.
Students regularly win national prizes, notably the ‘Best Womenswear’ award at Graduate Fashion Week 2010, the ‘Young Tate 2009’ prize, the Channel 4 ‘Picture This’ photography prize and numerous art competition awards. Alumni include Jamie Hewlett, creator of virtual band Gorillaz and Tank Girl. Students come to Northbrook from all over the UK and abroad.
Our courses successfully promote the development of creative practitioners, artists, designers and communicators; equipping students with the knowledge and skills for careers in creative industries. The excellent facilities provide specialist learning environments, including: painting studios, design workshops, fashion design/construction workrooms, printed and knitted textile workshops, film/photographic studios, print studios, machinery for wood, metal and clay and suites of Apple Mac computers. Many of the lecturing staff are industry practitioners and have current links to the creative industries.
